Great Guitar Tone with IK Multimedia AmpliTube: The Official Guide

Great Guitar Tone
with IK Multimedia AmpliTube

Whether you're a guitarist, bassist, producer or engineer, the new "Great Guitar Tone with IK Multimedia AmpliTube: The Official Guide" will open your eyes and mind up to a completely new world of guitar tone euphoria.

Brought to you by Course Technology

Great Guitar Tone with IK Multimedia AmpliTubeMusic industry veteran, guitar player and producer Michael Ross takes you on a wonderful, fun filled journey deep into the nuances of one of the world's most popular guitar and bass tone software packages: AmpliTube. In his new release from Course Technology from Cengage Learning, Michael walks you through the entire program from tuner to rack, input to control and explains how to make the most of this powerful program from both a playing and recording perspective.

You'll get expert, real-world advice on a wide range of topics within AmpliTube, plus clear common-sense explanations of recording and playing theories, tips and tricks. Michael starts with the guitar… how to make sure you're getting the best possible sound out of your instrument and what you can do to keep it that way. Then he demystifies the hardware components of "the audio interface" and "the MIDI controller." If these have been somewhat of a confusing subject for you, fret no more.

You'll learn about hardware and software latency and how to prevent it. You'll learn how to control your software from a hardware device via MIDI control and some hardware options; how to integrate and use AmpliTube within the most popular recording programs. And most importantly, Michael provides insights about how to listen… how to objectively and critically "listen" to your recordings and mixes so you can truly get the sound you're after.

Then comes the Gear

He starts with the amps and not only gives you a brief description and historical significance of the amp, but also provides insight on when to use particular models, and the categories of sounds for which they're best suited. Also you'll get tips on mixing and matching different pre-amp models with different EQ sections and power stages, creating unique custom sounds by digital wizardry not available in our physical world. Pretty slick.

The Low-Down

Next up is the exhaustive collection of speaker cabinets, complete with detailed info on the type of wood used for the cabinets, the driver make & model, plus the wiring (series/parallel), number and configuration of the speakers. All along the way you'll find "exercises" to perform that clearly demonstrate the different sonic nuances and give you even more insight into the application of the various components. You'll have a seasoned recording engineer and producer sitting right next to you, walking you through the program.

Mic it up

After the cabinet discussion, you'll get into microphones — details about each model and the best use for each, but also the historical significance of the models. Then, he walks you through the mic placement section of the cabinet module, and how to effectively place and use room mics in addition to miking the cabinet, depending upon the desired sound. You'll be amazed at how changing a mic can completely change the emotional content of sound, and Michael explains this in detail.

In AmpliTube, there are over 70 different available stompbox effects — from delays to distortions, dynamic modifiers to eqs, filter effects, modulation and pitch effects and of course "fuzz." You'll learn applications for each and how "less is more, unless more is more." You'll also learn the difference between the front-end stompbox effect application and the post signal rack effect application, and which is suited best for your recordings.

There's also a dedicated chapter on the 8 little boxes in the upper left corner of the application: the powerful signal routing options available in AmpliTube. You'll get tips on how to get the most out of each rig/routing preset, and additional creative ways to use them on multiple tracks.

Once all the features and gear models are thoroughly detailed, it's time to start using AmpliTube. In the last two chapters, everything comes together. Michael shows you examples of how to get genre-specific sounds using the gear models, then in the last chapter takes you on a complete recording journey from start to finish.

"Great Guitar Tone with IK Multimedia AmpliTube: The Official Guide" is not only a fantastic reference for AmpliTube, but a great common sense "how to" digital recording guide for guitar and bass players. Engineers and producers will also learn additional tips and tricks that will help them simplify the process get the absolute most out of their recordings.

"Great Guitar Tone with IK Multimedia AmpliTube: The Official Guide"' can be purchased directly from the IK Multimedia web storeIK dealers and distributors, or through Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com and select music retailers around the world.
