Favorite mic for vocals?

It's said that to get a great sound in the mix, you need to start with a great mic. It's also said that the perfect mic for one voice might not work for another. That said, what's YOUR favorite mic for vocals?

Well, let me start by saying that i own a Generic AKG Mic and can't sing 'doodoo', but i discovered that preamps and effects play a MAJOR role in the final voice sound.

I only own a PODxt, and it's totally different to plug my mic in the Tube Preamp sim of the POD than in my GUITAR TUBE AMP - the POD's really better.

So all in all i don't have much to contribute, but i think that singing well and IN-TUNE is the most important thing, and i don't see many people (not even so-called 'pros') doing it very well. At least not all of the time.

I had an Oktava MK-319 about 10 years ago. Wish I still had it, I'd have it modded.

Yeah I'll probably send it in sooner or later but it still sounds killer as is. The only mod I've done is remove the inner layers of mesh.

For studio or home recording, I like condenser mics (Rode M1 or AT2020) and
for live vox I usually use an SM-58 or AKG D-5.

Aloha guys,

Mics for vox

1-U87-U47
2-EV RE20
3-SM58

Preamps/comps/de-ess

1176 or Manley Voxbox—> for clean
Joe Meek SC4 DAD or VC6Q—> for colour.

Many more mics and a few more pre's but the above is 'go-to' gear.

{'-'}
If yer gear ain't breakin down, you ain't workin much!

I use an SM58 Beta Blue for both live vox and recording. I was really made up recently when I caught up with a Daniel Lanois interview (gearslutz.com)in which he is quoted as saying; that the entire vocals on Peter Gabriel's 'So' album were recorded in the monitor room using a SM58 Beta. I liked the sound of the mic when I auditioned it along side a few other brands at point of purchase but I never thought it was that good!:D Now I just have to tell the world!

I would def say mine is a blue bluebird. Very crisp, clean quality from that thing. Great on acoustic guitars to.

I tried a Neumann U87 first time I recorded vocals in the studio, but it wasn't gelling with my voice. Then I tried an AKG C 414 B-ULS and it worked pretty well. I've been quite superstitious about these two mics ever since. :|
