“I'll Always Have My 'Perfect Mix Room' Thanks to ARC System”
Terry Wendt, super producer for Shania Twain and others
A music producer for more than 25 years, Terry Wendt's past and present credits include Shania Twain, The Lynn's, The Wendt Brothers, Correna Ann, River County and many others. An avid IK Multimedia software user, he immediately jumped at getting ARC System™ for his home studio. Here Wendt tells IK his first impressions of ARC System."Being all to familiar with IK products (I've used it in numerous recording/mix situations--- AmpliTube, the famous T-RackS 24, among others) and knowing the software company's overall 'user friendly approach' plus its appreciation for musicians and engineers, it removed any questions or concerns I might have had about purchasing my ARC System." After utilizing the amazing capabilities of the ARC System my 'truths' were found by multiple samplings on various listening locations. Immediately I could tell a major difference in the audio. With the ARC System on, the audio was so much richer with accuracy! When I made changes to the EQ settings and FX settings, the changes were immediately reflected and I, for the first time without headphones, heard the noticeable difference –what a change! ...in my room!! This was not what the room had previously been sharing with me. No more adding to the mids, hiding my lows, and also surprisingly squashing and twisting many of the higher frequencies as well. ARC called a simple 'truce' with my room and me. No matter what configuration I am using here, I always have my 'perfect mix room' thanks to IK Multimedia's ARC System."IK: After ARC'ing your room, what problems did your room have that ARC fixed?"Our room here is all hardwood floors and has cathedral ceilings (12' high on the front side) but is an odd 13'6"x 33' long, with a rounded sidewall protruding on one end. Though very attractive for sitting and gabbing, and a cool vibe for mixing and recording this room had major issues with frequency variations. Several areas are 'extremely live' while others had 'major dead zones' and though I optimally had everything tweaked, it still wasn't the ideal mixing room. I found that around 220-580 I had ALL KINDS of problems and that's where most of the music lives, so without the aid of multiple listening/confirmation locations, I was pressed to say the least. There were obviously going to be compromises if I didn't do something. Now that ARC is in place in all my recording software platforms I can actually throw the plug in for the client when he/she's on the sofa and they hear the same mix as I did when I was 'in my mix zone' setting! We have a partition that separates parts of the room and I even have a setting to 'click' (and its literally that simple!) when I change the room around- and the sound is always the same!"IK: Would you recommend ARC to another engineer or musician?"Hey the biggest thing I can say is this- 'What cha got behind your ears?' The ARC system offers an extremely consistent environment to mix and to listen to music more accurately without the aid of your expensive Ultrasone Proline (though very comfortable headphones) for hours at a time. Now my signal and sonic smoothness never changes from various system to system on playback, and most of the other producers, engineers and musicians I know out there can't afford to have there room remodeled acoustically every time they want to change something (like their speakers -to get a more accurate sound). I'm often asked, 'why does IT ALWAYS CHANGE' when they hear their mix played somewhere other than their studio. I've heard people try to play this off as 'well, my mix hasn't been mastered yet. PUT A FEW BUCKS ON AN ARC SYSTEM FIRST ...and it won't matter what kind of foam and speakers you put into your room!!!"More about ARC System.
